PT-141, also known by its generic name Bremelanotide, is a synthetic melanocortin receptor agonist derived from Melanotan II. Unlike traditional sexual dysfunction therapies that act on the vascular system (e.g., PDE5 inhibitors), PT-141 targets the central nervous system, stimulating sexual arousal and desire via activation of melanocortin-4 receptors (MC4R) in the brain.
It is FDA-approved for the treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women, making it the first melanocortin-based therapy approved for sexual dysfunction.
